[ARCHIVED] Expanded Access to History: Digitization of Loudoun’s Free Black and Enslaved Papers 1757-1865

The Honorable Gary M. Clemens, Clerk of the Circuit Court and Eric Larson, Historic Records Manager of the Clerk of the Circuit Court Historic Records Division will discuss the preparation, conservation and digitization of Loudoun’s Free Black records for research. Mr. Clemens, who created a division specializing in historic records preservation, has served as Loudoun’s Clerk of the Circuit Court since January 2000.

Dr. Sheri Ann Huerta, from George Mason University will discuss a few case studies locating family history in the Loudoun County court records, information about enslaved lives, and what the documents tell us about the nature of freedom in a slave society. Dr. Huerta is the author of A Great Uneasiness In Our County: Slavery and Its Influence on Family and Community Stability in Northern Virginia, 1782-1860.

This will be the first virtual program offered by the Historic Records Division.
