The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS) is pleased to welcome Travis Preau as the Assistant Chief of Support Services and Volunteer Administration.

Assistant Chief Preau (pronounced Prō) is a progressive fire service leader that brings with him twenty-five years of combined career and volunteer experience in fire and emergency medical services. Chief Preau most recently served as the Battalion Chief of Administration for the City of Richmond Fire Department where he has worked for the last nineteen years. During his tenure in the City, he has held numerous assignments including officer positions in both the Technical Rescue and Hazardous Materials Teams, Recruit Training Instructor, Safety Officer, Fire Investigator, Communications Liaison, and Fire Administration. In his last position, Chief Preau oversaw and coordinated the Logistics, Fleet, Communications, and Information Technology Sections where some of his most significant initiatives included various fire station renovation projects, the installation of vehicle exhaust capture systems in each of the City’s fire stations, and the implementation of a tractor drawn aerial program.

Outside of his work with the City of Richmond, Chief Preau is an adjunct instructor with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs as well as a Peer Assessor and Accreditation Manager for the Center of Public Safety Excellence. He is also an active member of the Central Virginia Type 3 All Hazards Incident Management Team and is credentialed as a Type 3 Logistics Section Chief, Safety Officer, and Admin/Finance Section Chief.

Chief Preau began his fire service career in 1996 as a volunteer firefighter in the City of Franklin, Virginia where he was trained as a Firefighter/EMT-Intermediate. After moving to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, he joined the Henry Volunteer Fire Department in Hanover County where he rose to the rank of Assistant District Chief during his 16-year tenure before being hired by the City of Richmond Fire Department in 2002.

Chief Preau holds an undergraduate degree for Virginia Commonwealth University with a concentration in Homeland Security and Emergency Planning and is on track to graduate in the fall with a master’s degree in Public Administration and graduate certificate in Local Government Management from Virginia Tech. Locally he is a graduate of the Virginia Chief Officer’s Academy, the Metro Richmond Public Safety Leadership Academy, and the City of Richmond’s Supervisory Leadership Academy.

As a self-proclaimed family man, Chief Preau is happily married to his wife, Kachelle, with whom they have two young daughters.
