[ARCHIVED] Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps Seeks Volunteer Vaccinators to Help Protect Community’s Health

The Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is issuing a call for volunteer vaccinators—especially for those who are comfortable with vaccinating young children—to help in protecting the community’s health as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The county anticipates an upcoming increase in demand for the COVID-19 vaccine, which will require additional support from the Loudoun MRC and the medical community.

In the coming weeks, it is expected that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will recommend that children ages 5 to 11 receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Shortly after this occurs, it is expected that the Virginia Department of Health will authorize local health departments to begin administering vaccines to this age group.

“Vaccination is critical to keeping our children safe and our schools open as we head into an expected winter surge in cases,” said Loudoun County Health Director Dr. David Goodfriend. “Loudoun MRC volunteers who are comfortable vaccinating young children will be valuable partners to the county as we work to meet the demand for vaccination of those who are unable to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through their pediatrician or local pharmacy.”

Registered nurses, nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and physicians with a current Virginia license who are comfortable vaccinating children as young as 5 years old are needed now to ensure there are enough vaccinators available as soon as the Loudoun County Health Department is authorized to begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine to this younger age group.

“We encourage anyone with the prescribed medical training and some extra time to volunteer to sign up to support this important vaccination campaign to keep our children safe,” said MRC Coordinator Francis Rath.

More information about the MRC, including an online volunteer registration form, can be found at loudoun.gov/mrc.
