Loudoun County and Fauquier County Fire Crews Battle Fully Involved Fire of a Residential Style Barn

Residential Style Barn on Fire on January 6, 2022

At approximately 1:00 a,m., Thursday, January 6, 2022, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue’s Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a call from Fauquier County’s ECC reporting a structure fire in the 8500 block of John Mosby Highway in Upperville. This area is a border area between Loudoun County and Fauquier County, therefore fire and rescue units from both counties share responsibilities for response. Loudoun County Fire and Rescue units from Middleburg, Aldie, Philomont and Purcellville were dispatched, along with units from Fauquier County and Mount Weather. As a rural area without hydrants, the initial dispatch was supplemented with a tanker response and the addition of a Tanker Task Force assignment.

Engine 1105 from the Upperville Station in Fauquier County arrived on scene first to a heavy timber residential style barn estimated to be 10,000 square feet in size fully involved in fire. The fire had extended to additional outbuildings, heavy equipment, and a camper. There were no people or animals in the barn at the time of the fire. Crews used defensive operations to protect exposures and begin extinguishing the main fire. Collapse zones were established for safety and all personnel remained in a non-immediately dangerous to life and health position during operations. Most of the fire was extinguished by about 1:34 a.m. Fire crews remained on scene throughout the evening extinguishing the smaller fires and hotspots.

At approximately 4:40 a.m., overhaul was completed with all fires extinguished, and the scene was turned over to the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office. The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office investigation is currently ongoing. There were no reported injuries to citizens or first responders.
