[ARCHIVED] Groundbreaking Scheduled Jan. 24 for Route 7 and George Washington Boulevard Overpass

Informational graphic about groundbreaking ceremony

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Loudoun County will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking to extend George Washington Boulevard (Route 1050) from Research Place south to Russell Branch Parkway via a new bridge over Route 7.

A groundbreaking ceremony recognizing the start of construction is scheduled for Monday, January 24, 2022, 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of Richfield Way and Russell Branch Parkway in Ashburn. (Parking will be available at the Ashburn North Park and Ride Lot, 45151 Russell Branch Parkway). State elected officials, members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and representatives of VDOT are scheduled to be on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking.

The $33.2 million, quarter-mile George Washington Boulevard extension will be a four-lane road/bridge with a shared-use path along one side and a sidewalk along the other. This project aims to improve traffic flow on Route 7, reduce congestion at the Route 7 interchanges with Loudoun County Parkway and Ashburn Village Boulevard, and improve accessibility for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians by connecting parallel roads to Route 7 (Riverside Parkway and George Washington Boulevard) with parallel roads to Route 28 (Russell Branch Parkway and Pacific Boulevard). The project also aims to improve access to the George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus and the Strayer University Loudoun Campus.

This project is financed with federal, state and Loudoun County funding. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2024.

More information can be found on the VDOT project webpage.
