Loudoun Clerk of the Circuit Court Gary M. Clemens is celebrating Black History Month with the release of a new brochure entitled, African-American History at the Loudoun County Courthouse. A virtual program centered on the history documented by the brochure is scheduled for Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. Information on how to access the virtual event, Let the Records Speak: African-American History at the Loudoun County Courthouse, is online at loudoun.gov/remoteparticipation

The new brochure covers African-American history at the courthouse through the historic court records retained in the Clerk’s Office. Information and images portray the history of Loudoun’s African-American community from the time of enslavement, post-Civil War reconstruction, the era of segregation/Jim Crow and the battles for integrated schools and equality.

The brochure’s concept and design were developed by the Clerk’s Historic Records Division in partnership with the Black History Committee of the Friends of Thomas Balch Library.

The teams involved in the collaborative effort researched numerous court records among the Clerk’s collections for legal cases, information pertaining to key individuals and significant events that impacted the lives of African-Americans in Loudoun County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States. “My extraordinary team of deputy clerks along with our history partners have done a fabulous job creating this unique brochure that succinctly tells a story of our valuable African American history,” noted Clemens. “To truly appreciate this incredibly valuable history, come visit our small historic records museum located in my office in downtown Leesburg.”

Five-thousand brochures are being distributed throughout Loudoun County, including through the Thomas Balch Library, Loudoun County Public Library, local government agencies, Visit Loudoun, the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, Loudoun County Public Schools and various historical organizations. Anyone interested in helping the Clerk’s Office with distribution of these brochures is encouraged to email the Historic Records Division

More information about the historic records in the Clerk’s Office may be found at loudoun.gov/clerkarchives. To find out more about the services offered by the Clerk of the Circuit Court, visit loudoun.gov/clerk.
