On March 18, 2022, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported that a woman, armed with a knife, was shot by deputies after she lunged at them. The woman was transported to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and died. In addition to the decedent, another woman and one of the juveniles, a 15-year-old female, suffered stab wounds during the initial argument with the decedent. The injuries to the woman and juvenile are non-life threatening. No deputies were injured during the incident.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Fairfax Field Office, at the request of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The investigation remains ongoing at this time. Once completed, the Virginia State Police will turn its investigative findings over to the Commonwealth's Attorney for review and final adjudication.
Commonwealth Attorney Buta Biberaj stated, “Our condolences go to the families of the victims and the decedent for their loss, and to the deputies for their traumatic experiences. It is always tragic when our community experiences a loss of life, or serious injury as a result of violence. We will review the investigative findings of the Virginia State Police and report any decision that results therefrom. We ask the community to keep the families in their prayers.”
Please note, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney does not have investigatory resources in-house and relies wholly on the law enforcement agencies serving Loudoun County and their investigations for the basis of prosecuting criminal offenses in Loudoun County. We are proud of the work they do and support them in their efforts.
