Employment Gaps are More Common Than You ThinkGaps in our employment history happen for a variety of reasons, to include: raising a family, caring for a sick family member, managing with our own health issues, returning to school, being laid off, etc. When you find yourself in any of these situations, consider the following activities that can help fill and/or explain your gap time: - Strategic and targeted volunteer activities
- Career development workshops (free at the Workforce Resource Center)
- Consulting/contract/freelance work
- Part-time employment, even if outside your career field
- Working for temporary agencies
Always be prepared to honestly explain employment gaps on your resume and during the job interview; the questions will come up. Get yourself ready by attending one of our interview preparation or resume writing workshops.

R.K.'s Story"I came to the Workforce Resource Center to find a new job. The staff helped me with everything from updating my resume and online applications to employment coaching and workshops. Thanks to the center’s support and assistance, I was hired for a permanent position with Loudoun County Public Schools as a substitute teacher. I also got a position with Loudoun County Parks and Recreation working as an after school program aide. This has allowed me to stop working the three retail jobs I had before. It’s been a challenge, but the staff at the Center were with me every step of the way." Please share your own job success with us.
