Community Spotlight: Loudoun Literacy Council
Conversation with Karen Feldman, Adult Literacy Program Director at the Loudoun Literacy Council
What is Loudoun Literacy Council?
Loudoun Literacy Council is a non-profit organization that has provided literacy services to Loudoun County for over 40 years. Our mission is to teach English communication skills and provide literacy resources to empower people to become self-sufficient and confident in their ability to achieve their personal and professional goals.
How can Loudoun Literacy Council help me with my language goals?
Loudoun Literacy Council provides free, online and in-person English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes to people 18 years of age and older. Classes are taught at the basic beginner, beginner, intermediate, high intermediate and advanced levels. The in-person classes are offered at various neighborhood sites within the County. We can work with you on your interviewing and job search skills, too. Through our Jobsite Literacy program, we work with employers to create a tailor-made curriculum which enables employees to better communicate with their colleagues, clients, customers, and supervisors. In addition, we provide health literacy and financial literacy instruction as well as one-on-one tutoring for ESOL and GED and Citizenship test preparation.
Tell us about your teachers and tutors?
The teachers and tutors are Loudoun Literacy Council trained volunteers from the community. They come from all backgrounds and range from college students to retirees. Some speak languages other than English, such as Spanish, Hindi, Farsi among other languages too. However, being bilingual is not a requirement for teaching/tutoring.
How can I get more information about your classes and tutoring services?
