Community Spotlight: Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR)
Conversation with Roslynn Gray, Director of Re-Entry Services
Tell me about the OAR organization and the services you offer in the Loudoun community.OAR's mission is to rebuild lives and create a safer community with opportunities, alternatives, and resources for justice-involved individuals and their families. We work towards a vision of a world where communities impacted by the justice system provide equitable opportunities for all people to lead fulfilling lives. This is our 50th year providing services and we serve in Loudoun, Fairfax and Prince William counties. OAR assists justice-involved individuals and their families with the following: classes that address the unique needs of the population, case management services, assistance with employment, and connections to community resources for housing, medical, and mental health. In addition to the community-based services, OAR actively engages with individuals in the local Adult Detention Centers and supports families during visitation, release preparation classes, mentoring, and reentry assistance to prepare incarcerated community members for a successful release. How can OAR support job seekers in their work search or career change?Justice involved individuals often have additional challenges identifying new career paths and employment opportunities. OAR case managers understand how to help clients: - Identify "second chance" employment opportunities;
- Recognize their transferrable skills and applicable career paths;
- Understand what, how and when to disclose about background challenges; and
- Develop an effective elevator pitch around their key knowledge, skills & abilities.
How can someone get started with OAR? If you are interested in volunteering with OAR or you are a justice involved individual and would like additional information about our services, please contact us at 703.246.3033 or email us at info@oarnova.org. You can also find out more about programs and services, as well as our office locations in the region by visiting our website at www.oarnova.org. In-person services with our staff can be offered by appointment and we offer virtual appointments via Zoom and MS Teams as well. We look forward to the opportunity to assist you!
