Eye Exams are Important at All Ages

Eye Care for Your Best LifeWhether someone is eight or 80, eye exams are critical for healthy eyes and vision. Eye exams can identify vision problems and protect you from the impact of devastating eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration, which are among the leading causes of blindness. Eye exams also allow eye care professionals to take a noninvasive look inside the body, which provides an opportunity to detect up to 30 chronic medical conditions, even before symptoms occur. Treatment for these diseases, which range from heart disease to cognitive dysfunction, is more effective when caught in their early stages.
Routine eye exams should begin in early childhood since young children may be unable to communicate their vision challenges. Vision also plays a significant role in learning. Students engage in many vision-dependent activities such as reading, writing, and sports. In fact, 80 percent of what children learn requires healthy eyes and vision.
Regular eye exams are increasingly important as we get older. As our population ages, the number of blind and visually impaired people in the United States is estimated to double by 2030. Paying attention to our vision and eye health can significantly reduce that number and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans.
Schedule your eye exam today and make an eye exam part of your preventative care routine. Pre-65 retirees and eligible enrolled dependents can access their vision benefits through Davis Vision. Retirees enrolled in the Medicare Surround Plan can access their vision benefits through Cigna Vision.

Your Body was Made to MoveIf there were a magic pill to prevent aging, the closest thing would be exercise. Daily activity helps prevent obesity, heart disease and diabetes – not to mention, it keeps you feeling great. Regardless of age, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise every week or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. Incorporate both aerobic activity and strength training into your routine for maximum benefits. But as you move through decades, there will be some adjustments that need to be made and limitations to account for. Click to read more about exercise by age.

Sign Up for a Financial Planning Webinar MissionSquare Retirement is hosting financial planning webinars that can help you in retirement.
Most of us imagine retirement as a happy time, a reward for a lifetime of hard work, full of possibility and potential. We have good reason to see retirement in a positive light. Americans are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. In fact, for some of us, retirement will make up a full third of our lives. Of course, this means that our retirement assets will have to do more for us over a longer period of time. This makes planning for our retirement essential. Everyone can benefit from a financial plan that is tailored to individual needs and circumstances. A financial roadmap can motivate you to save money, help you meet your financial goals, and improve your overall financial security now and in the future.
According to the federal government, a majority of people over age 65 will need some type of long-term care, with a significant number of people needing care in a nursing home. Learn about steps you can take to plan for this expense.
Join MissionSquare Retirement for an update on the financial markets for the most recent quarter. To register for the above or additional upcoming webinars, visit icmarc.org/cfpwebinars.

Advance health care directives are written instructions to your loved ones and others about the type of medical treatment and health care you'd like to receive if you're unable to communicate directly with your health care providers. Because these statements are made before medical treatment and health care is actually needed, they are often referred to as “advance directives.” Advance directives include legal documents such as living wills and durable power of attorney for health care. Loudoun County requires you and your Medicare eligible dependents to enroll in both Medicare Part A and Part B, if entitled, when you first become eligible to qualify for enrollment in the Cigna Medicare Surround Plan and CIGNA Rx Medicare. This means that Medicare will become your primary insurance while the Cigna Medicare Surround Plan becomes your secondary insurance. You must provide proof of Medicare enrollment to the Loudoun County Benefits Division 45 days prior to your Medicare coverage effective date; otherwise, you may become responsible for expenses Medicare doesn’t pay. Contact the Loudoun County Benefits Office for questions related to Medicare enrollment.
