Independent Candidates

The filing deadline for independent candidates for offices elected in November is 7:00 p.m., on the third Tuesday of June. For town officials elected in May, the deadline is 7:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday in March.

Candidates for School Board, Soil and Water Conservation District, Mayor, and Town Council run as independents and therefore are not nominated by parties or primary elections.

Petitions

General election candidates may begin circulating petitions for signatures January 2 of the election year. Any signatures obtained before this date will be rendered invalid and not counted.

Petitions require a minimum number of signatures. Each person signing a petition must be a registered voter. All petitions must be certified before a candidate can be placed on the ballot. The number of signatures required for various offices is as follows:

  • State Senate: 250
  • House of Delegates: 125
  • Board of Supervisors: 125
  • School Board: 125
  • Soil and Water Commission: 25
  • *Constitutional Offices: 125
  • **Mayor: 125
  • **Town Council: 125

**Towns with more than 1,500 registered voters. No petitions are required in towns with fewer than 1,500 registered voters.
