[ARCHIVED] Design Phase for Route 7 Shared Use Path Now Set for Winter 2024 Completion

The original item was published from August 28, 2023 4:13 PM to September 21, 2023 5:23 PM

The design phase for the Route 7 Shared Use Path project is now set to be completed in winter 2024 (January/February/March), extending the design phase approximately six months past the previous summer 2023 estimate. The project provides for the design, Right-of-Way (ROW) acquisition, and construction of a 10-foot-wide shared use path along the north side of Route 7 between Campus Drive (Route 391), the entrance of the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Loudoun Campus, and Lakeland Drive (Route 821) in Sterling.

As a result of feedback from area residents and landowners, the design team is investigating alternative alignments for the shared use path along the Route 7 frontage of Signal Hill Plaza. The design team is also conducting additional outfall analyses for stormwater runoff into the Cardinal Glen neighborhood. The additional analyses have extended design phase completion from summer 2023 to winter 2024.

The project’s ROW phase will begin winter 2024. More information about Loudoun County Capital Project phases is provided at loudoun.gov/capitalprojects.

About the Project

The Route 7 Shared Use Path project involves the design and construction of a 10-foot-wide shared use path along the north side of Route 7 between Campus Drive (Route 391), the entrance of Northern Virginia Community College and Lakeland Drive (Route 821) approximately 1,500 feet west of the Fairfax County line in Sterling. The total length of the proposed shared use path is approximately 1.3 miles.

This project was previously part of the Route 7 Pedestrian Improvements project that consisted of two elements - three pedestrian crossings of Route 7 and a shared use path along the north side of Route 7. To help provide clarity in project reporting, the two project elements have been separated into two projects. Construction of the shared use path is currently estimated to begin in 2026.
