Free Microchip Clinic

Friday, November 20, 2020

Loudoun residents are invited to bring their cats and dogs over 8 weeks of age to this free microchip clinic. Cats must be in carriers and dogs on non-retractable leashes. This clinic will be drive through to allow for social distancing, please bring a face covering. Microchips are a safe, permanent way of identifying pets should they ever be found by Animal Services or a veterinary office. The microchip itself is about the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted under the skin in the area around the shoulders through a needle. The procedure is no more invasive than a vaccination shot, and requires no anesthesia or recovery time. Once implanted, the number on the chip is registered with the owner’s information. The microchip can be read by a scanner (similar to a bar code scanner) and provides a unique number for animal shelters, veterinarians, and rescues to trace the microchip back to the owner in order to reunite them with their pet. A microchip is not a GPS unit.
