Environmental Commission Hosts Energy & Environment Forum May 14, 2024

Members of the community are encouraged to learn and engage about Loudoun County’s efforts to increase environment and energy sustainability by attending the second annual Energy and Environment Forum Tuesday, May 14, 2024, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., at the Academies of Loudoun, 42075 Loudoun Academy Drive, Leesburg. The forum is hosted by the Loudoun County Environmental Commission, which advises the Board of Supervisors on policies and practices dealing with the environment, sustainability and the management of energy. 

The forum will feature breakout sessions with subject matter experts in the areas of energy and the environment. The forum will also feature ongoing listening sessions to hear from community members about what Loudoun should be working on with respect to environmental and sustainable energy matters

We’re Listening - Share Your Thoughts on Energy and Environment
Ongoing throughout the forum: What do you want to see from your local government? Members of the Environmental Commission and an energy equity consultant will be on hand to hear your thoughts on what Loudoun County should be working on regarding environmental and sustainable energy matters.

Green Futures – Speed Dating for Environmental Careers
Ongoing throughout the forum: 10-minute sessions: Hear from a variety of professionals in the "green" field about the wide range of careers in the energy and environment space. Direct interaction in small groups. Appropriate for high school/college students as well as those looking to change careers. 

Get Informed: Energy and Environment Issues in Your Community - Breakout Sessions

Electric Avenue - Driving An Electric Vehicle
Ongoing: See electric vehicles up close and talk with regular owners about their experiences buying an EV and getting around in one. Sit in an electric school bus!

$hrink that Bill  - Everyday Home Energy Savings
6:20, 6:45, 7:10, 7:35 p.m. - Learn about ways to make your home more energy efficient and about programs and incentives that make improvements more affordable. Save money on your energy bill and help the environment too!

Where the Wild Things Go – Wildlife Corridors in Loudoun County
6:20,  7:10 p.m. - Learn about how our wild animal neighbors roam across the land, the costs of wildlife-vehicle interactions, and ways we can help our wild neighbors travel the county safely.

What Tree is Right for Your Yard? – Successful Planting of Native Trees
6:45, 7:35 p.m. - Find out how to select the right tree for your yard or HOA common space. You want something that looks beautiful, grows successfully, and stands up to invasive species. What should you plant and how can you make it happen?

From Your Yard to Your Faucet & Streams – What’s the Connection
6:20,  7:10 p.m. - Where does the rainwater go after it falls? Learn about Loudoun's watersheds and how water goes from Loudoun yards to our faucets, streams, and the Chesapeake Bay.

6:45, 7:35 p.m. -  Interested in getting solar power at your home? Not sure where to start? Learn about how you can get a solar photovoltaic system installed on your house or townhouse.

Community members are invited to provide feedback on energy and environment issues in Loudoun through a survey. The purpose of the survey is to inform the commission’s considerations in future input to the Board and county staff.

Background

The annual Energy and Environment Forum provides members of the public with the opportunity to learn more about energy and environmental topics and provide comments on what the county’s role should be in regard to energy and environmental sustainability. The public’s comments are shared with the Board of Supervisors during the Environmental Commission’s annual update to the Board.
