Reclaiming a Pet from LCAS

Virginia state law requires proof of ownership to reclaim a pet from an animal shelter. Proof of ownership can include dog license, veterinary record, bill of sale, adoption contract or any other official document that indicates ownership but must include the animals description as well as owner’s information such as name, address and phone number. Please bring identification such as a driver’s license, passport or other I.D. (third party verification is also acceptable). A person over the age of 18 has to reclaim the pet.

Fees

Fees for reclaiming a pet may apply. If the pet has been impounded by a Humane Law Enforcement Officer, there will be a $35 fee if it is the first time the animal has been impounded or a $75 fee if the animal has been impounded two or more times. Board fees may also apply and are calculated based upon the number of days the pet is housed at the animal shelter. The board fee for dogs is $15 per day and for cats is $10 per day.

Business Hours

Pets can be reclaimed during normal business hours. Please note that the shelter is closed for on Mondays. Owners wishing to reclaim their lost pet on Mondays must do so by appointment only by calling 703-777-0406.
