Road Renaming Initiative 2022-2024
- The process of renaming a number of roads and streets throughout Loudoun County began in April 2022 and included several neighborhood streets and the renaming of Route 7 and Route 50. The initiative was completed in March 2024.
For Residents and Businesses
- Affected property owners were notified of the effective date of their new address and street name approximately sixty days in advance.
- The county also provided the new road and street names to Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, TomTom and the United States Postal Service, requesting that these providers update their data and systems.
- The county provided a checklist of agencies to notify of an address change (PDF).
Implementation Timeline
This initiative has occurred on a rolling basis for specific roads and streets. Choose your road or street below for details.
The renamings of Leesburg Court in Sterling and Little River Lane in Aldie have been completed. Leesburg Court was renamed to Compass Rose Court and Little River Lane was renamed to Vilgrain Farm Lane. The new street names are available in Apple Maps, Google Maps, Open Street Map and Waze.
The county worked with the Town of Round Hill in a coordinated effort to rename several streets in and around the town.
- The following roads were renamed:
- The new name of Early Avenue will be Earlybird Avenue.
- The name of Hampton Road will be Cinnamon Fern Road.
- The new name of Jackson Avenue will be Honeybee Avenue.
- The new name of Lee Drive will be Turtle Hill Drive.
- The new name of Longstreet Avenue will be Piper Run Avenue.
- The new name of Pickett Road will be Broken Arrow Road.
The county mailed letters to property owners on the affected roads and streets officially notifying them of the name change.
- Jeb Stuart Road
- The process of renaming Jeb Stuart Road has been completed and all new street signs are in place. The new name is Philomont Road.
- Fort Johnston Road
- The segment of Fort Johnston Road between Alysheba Drive and Leeland Orchard Road has been renamed Leeland Orchard Road.
- The remaining segment was renamed Fort Star Lane. Property owners submitted name suggestions; eligible names were then circulated for a vote. The name with the most votes was “Fort Star,” which was proposed in recognition of the fort’s star-shaped, earthen construction.
- In December 2021, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved the renaming of Harry Byrd Highway (Route 7) as Leesburg Pike.
- The renaming was approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board in February 2022.
- The county coordinated with the Virginia Department of Transportation to implement the sign replacement process.
- The county notified property owners 60 days in advance of the official road name and address change.
- With the name change effective September 28, 2023, Loudoun County replaced the blue rectangular signs on Route 7 with signs that say "Leesburg Pike." The Virginia Department of Transportation installs the larger overhead green signs.
- In December 2021, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved the renaming of John Mosby Highway (Route 50) as Little River Turnpike.
- The renaming was approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board in February 2022.
