- The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has reviewed the county’s application for a federal grant to mitigate flooding issues Selma Estates, and has submitted the application to the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities grant program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
- The county had expected the grant to be submitted to FEMA’s Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) program. However, VDEM has determined that BRIC program is a better fit for the Selma Estates project, which may increase the likelihood of the program receiving federal funding.
- All elements of the application that were submitted for Loudoun County’s FMA application remain the same for the transfer to the BRIC application. The County’s project scope, budget submitted, and match have all transferred over to the BRIC program application with no changes. The project’s timeline remains unchanged; award decisions are expected to be announced in January 2022 (FY 2022).
- Launched in early August 2020, the new BRIC grant program supports states, local communities, tribes and territories, as they undertake hazard mitigation projects reducing the risks they face from disasters and natural hazards. The program aims to shift the federal focus away from reactive disaster spending and toward research-supported, proactive investment in community resilience. FEMA seeks to fund projects through BRIC that demonstrate innovative approaches to partnerships, such as shared funding mechanisms, and/or project design.
