The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Loudoun County for Friday, July 19, 2019, forecasting temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and heat index values of up to 110 degrees.

When the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat warning for Loudoun County, the county’s community centers, recreation centers, and libraries serve as designated cooling centers, providing air conditioning, water and a place to sit.

On Friday, July 19, 2019, facilities acting as official cooling centers will include all branches of the Loudoun County Public Library. Ashburn, Cascades, Gum Spring, Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville, and Rust libraries are open Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Brambleton and Sterling libraries are open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Information about library locations and hours may be found at library.loudoun.gov

Other Loudoun County facilities operating as cooling centers during normal business hours on Friday will include community centers, the Claude Moore Recreation Center and the Dulles South Recreation Center, operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services (PRCS). Information about hours and locations of specific PRCS facilities may be found at loudoun.gov/prcs

Temperatures for Saturday and Sunday are also forecast to be dangerously high; check your local library, community center, or recreation center schedule for weekend hours, which may be extended if needed.

Pets are not allowed in the cooling centers. Residents who are seeking shelter for themselves and their pets can access the Loudoun County Animal Shelter during weekend business hours. The Animal Shelter’s location and business hours can be found at loudoun.gov/animals.

Loudoun County officials remind residents to take precautions to prevent heat illnesses. Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned locations such as libraries, malls, and other public buildings, stay out of the sun, drink plenty of water, and make sure you are aware of the latest weather forecast. Also, do not leave children or pets in cars, and check on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
