“Brilliance & Resilience,” an art exhibit highlighting African American history, culture and contributions to Loudoun County, is on display in the lobby of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street SE in Leesburg.
The exhibition features artwork created by African American artists from Loudoun County and artwork that depicts real or imagined scenes from past, present and/or futuristic African American life and culture.
The exhibition includes a larger-than-lifesize statue of Martin Luther King Jr. by sculptor Jeff Hall of Lovettsville. It is a resin/plastic replica of a 7-foot bronze statue that Hall created for the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Aurora, Colorado. Hall won an international competition for the commission of the sculpture.
Other artists in the exhibition include: painter Gertrude Ashton Evans of Leesburg, photographer Diane Helentjaris of Leesburg, painter Reggie Simms of Purcellville and painter Rene Dickerson of Manassas, formerly of Loudoun County.
The artwork may be viewed in Gallery One on the first floor of the Loudoun County Government Center during regular business hours through March 13, 2020.
This exhibition is sponsored by the Loudoun County Art Advisory Committee. The Loudoun County Art Advisory Committee was created by the Board of Supervisors in 1978 to collect and display works of art that reflect the diverse Loudoun community. The AAC manages a large and growing permanent and loaned art collection as well as producing six art exhibits each year. More information about the committee is online at loudoun.gov/advisory-art.
