[ARCHIVED] Loudoun Joint Architectural Review Board Recognizes Architectural Excellence

The Loudoun County Joint Architectural Review Board (JARB) announces the winners of its annual awards program that recognizes individuals, organizations and companies whose projects in locally designated historic districts have made a positive and lasting contribution.

In addition, the JARB selects winners nominated by the public for the Community Blue Ribbon awards, which are given for projects located across the county, and not just within designated historic districts. The 2023 JARB award winners are:

Community Blue Ribbon: 

  • Historic Douglass High School Education and Development Campus, Leesburg, for the renovation and restoration of the circa 1941 historic Douglass High School.
  • Sylvanside Farm Restoration, Purcellville, for the rehabilitation of the late 18th century farm complex.
  • William Bradfield House, Bluemont, for the rehabilitation and restoration of the circa 1822 historic property.

Excellence in Additions

  • 220 N. King Street, Leesburg, for the compatible additions to a 1918 home.

Excellence in Restoration & Rehabilitation

  • 210 N. King Street, Leesburg, for the rehabilitation of the circa 1890 Gothic Revival style home.
  • 239 Market Street, Leesburg, for the rehabilitation of the circa 1825 Colonial vernacular style home after a car crashed into it. 

Excellence in Signage

  • 201 West Washington Street, Middleburg, recognized for the rehabilitation of the circa 1935 commercial building and its excellent new sign.
  • 108 West Washington Street, Middleburg, recognized for the carved and painted projecting sign from the mid-20th century commercial building. 
  • 7 West Washington Street, Middleburg, recognized for the tasteful and well-placed sign on a circa 1920 Romanesque Revival style building.
  • 116 West Washington Street, Middleburg, recognized for a detailed and well-done sign.

Excellence in Architectural Detail

  • 17 Cornwall Street NW, Leesburg, for the thoughtful inclusion of an historically appropriate fence to a circa 1905 Craftsman style home.
  • Waterford Little Free Library, Waterford, for the Little Free Library modeled after the historic Second Street School and built in compliance with the Historic District Guidelines. 

Excellence in Alterations

  • 109 Wirt Street, Leesburg, for the sensitive alterations and adaptive reuse of a former carriage house.

More Information

The JARB hosts the awards event each year along with the Loudoun Preservation Society to recognize preservation work across the county.

The Joint Architectural Review Board includes representatives of the Loudoun County Historic District Review Committee and representatives of the architectural review boards in Leesburg, Middleburg and Purcellville.
