Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and Victim Witness Program to Honor Crime Victims and Recognize Outstanding Efforts of Law Enforcement and Local Citizens

“Strength. Resilience. Justice.”

Loudoun County, Virginia- April 2nd – April 8th is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The 2017 theme “Strength. Resilience. Justice.” reflects a vision for the future in which all victims are strengthened by the response they receive, organizations are resilient in response to challenges, and communities are able to seek collective justice and healing.
National Crime Victims’ Rights Week honors and celebrates the achievements of the past thirty years in securing rights, protections, and services for victims. Outreach is increasingly focused on previously underserved populations, ensuring that efforts are being made to provide support to all victims, regardless of their background or the crime committed against them.

During the week, the U.S. Department of Justice leads communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. Here in Loudoun County, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Victim Witness Program will be distributing information regarding Crime Victims’ Rights and on Friday, April 7th at 10:00 a.m. will host their Annual Open House and Victims’ Services Award Ceremony. The event will be held in the Loudoun County Courthouse Community Room located at 18 East Market Street, Leesburg, Virginia.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman is pleased to announce that this year’s distinguished guest speakers will be Richard Rocha, Barbara Gonzalez, and Elisabeth Corey.

Richard Rocha and Barbara Gonzalez join us from the newly established Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement Office (VOICE). VOICE will be part of the Department of Homeland Security and will provide services to the victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens.

Elisabeth Corey is a survivor of family-controlled child sex trafficking and abuse. Corey’s encounters with domestic violence and incest began when she was two years old, and she has spent the past six years recovering from her childhood experiences and earning her master’s degree in social work. As an advocate, Corey works to bring awareness programs on sex abuse and sex trafficking to schools, she trains recovery partners working with adult and child survivors, and she shares her story of trauma and recovery on her Beating Trauma “The Courage to bring the darkness into the light” blog.

This year Victims’ Services Awards will be presented to: Leesburg Police Department Lieutenant Jaime Sanford, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Detective Michael Grimsley, and David and Stephanie Meeker.

The awards ceremony will be open to members of the public and media. All are encouraged to join us in our celebration and Open House. For additional information about National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, or crime victim assistance please contact the Loudoun County Victim Witness Program at 703-777-0417 or the Office for Victims of Crime, a component of the Office for Justice Programs within the U.S. Department of Justice at www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ovc/ncvrw.
