Auto Accident with Entrapment and Hazardous Materials Response

Hamilton, VA. – Yesterday’s vehicle accident involving a fuel tanker draws Hazardous Materials Response from Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, injuring one and closing a major road for nearly seven hours.
Just after 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11th, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a call for an accident in Hamilton involving a vehicle that collided with a tractor-trailer carrying 8,600 gallons of gasoline. Fire and rescue crews from Hamilton, Purcellville, Round Hill, Leesburg, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Mount Weather responded to the accident, located in front of the Hamilton Service Center at 39258 East Colonial Highway.
Heavy Rescue 617 from Hamilton arrived on scene to find a vehicle wedged under the trailer of a large gasoline tanker.  The driver of the passenger vehicle, an adult female, was trapped inside the vehicle and gasoline was actively leaking from the tanker. Additional resources were immediately requested to mitigate the leaking tanker including the Hazardous Materials Response Team from Dulles South Riding and Mount Weather and the Foam Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
Firefighters worked quickly to control the gasoline leak and stabilize the vehicles in order to safely extricate the driver of the passenger car. The patient was swiftly extricated and taken by ground to Reston Hospital Center with non-life threatening injuries.  The driver of the gasoline tractor trailer was uninjured.
Once the patient was removed, the Hazardous Materials Team worked to contain the approximately 700 gallons of spilled fuel and keep additional fuel from leaking from the damaged tanker. Fire and rescue crews, working in conjunction with Holtzman Fuel Company personnel, offloaded the remaining 7,900 gallons of fuel safely into another gasoline tanker tractor- trailer. Holtzman Fuel worked with a contracted company to perform the required clean-up under a correction order issued by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Virginia State Police is conducting the investigation into the vehicle crash.
