LC-CFRS Members Participate in Annual JEMS EMS Competition

JEMS 2019 Davis- Artisst

Recently members of the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System participated as subject matter experts for a resoundingly successful 2019 JEMS Games. Assistant Chief Robin Davis of the Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad, Dr. John Morgan, the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System's full-time Operational Medical Director and Captain Nicole Artisst, one of Loudoun County's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Supervisors assisted in the preparation and development of various activities for the games.

The JEMS Games is a challenging and educational clinical competition highlighting cutting-edge simulation technology for pre-hospital EMS care. The preliminary competition challenges teams to appropriately assess and provide quality, efficient patient care during three realistic, high-pressure scenarios and a written test. The top three teams move on to the final competition, a 20-minute high-energy scenario that requires managing multiple patients.

18 Teams from all over the world competed at the JEMS Games to demonstrate their EMS prowess in a fun and competitive environment. There were two teams from Taiwan, one team from England, and US teams from Texas, Florida, California, and New York, to name a few.

The preliminary round of the JEMS Games has teams of contestants face a series of challenges to test their overall knowledge, skill, and scene management during an EMS incident. Assistant Chief Davis served as the Operations Chief, he has been assisting with the JEMS Games for 15 years. He spent countless hours coordinating the logistics of the event, evaluating practical testing scenarios, and organizing the support staff working the games. Captain Artisst worked behind the scenes, helping to create the written exam which was translated into multiple languages to accommodate our International EMS counterparts. The teams completed a timed written exam with questions ranging from scenario based pre-hospital treatments, medication math and administration, pediatrics, cardiac care, EKG interpretation, and trauma. After completing the written test, teams moved through practical training evolutions where they demonstrated their ability to triage and manage a mass casualty incident, provide care for premature infants, and manage the care of a critical patient in extremely realistic scenarios using high fidelity mannequins. Once finished, teams were critiqued by Dr. Morgan where he assessed the care they provided during the life-like scenarios.

At the end of the day one, the top three teams, Empress EMS, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, and Sussex County EMS, would move forward to the final competition. At the final competition a stage was erected to resemble a boat dock and three inflatable rescue boats from Fairfax County Fire Department and Prince George’s County Fire Department were used to create the challenging scenario. After nine months of planning and preparation, the three teams competed in front of hundreds of on-lookers, videography crews, and photographers to win bragging rights as the best paramedics in the world. Congratulations to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue for their First Place finish!

"The participation of these three Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System Members on the development team for the 2019 Annual JEMS Games speaks to the caliber of knowledge, skill and leadership we have here in Loudoun," said System Chief Keith Johnson. "Thank you for representing Loudoun so well and sharing your experience with your peers on an International stage! "
