GAINESVILLE MAN SENTENCED FOR FIVE COUNTS OF POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

SIX YEAR ACTIVE SENTENCE IMPOSED

LEESBURG, Virginia – March 8, 2019.  Imtiaz Rauf, 45, appeared before Judge Douglas L. Fleming Jr. in Loudoun County Circuit Court for sentencing on one count of possession of child pornography and four counts of possession of child pornography, 2nd or subsequent offense.  Judge Fleming imposed a total active sentence of six years in the Virginia Department of Corrections.

In June 2017, Fairfax County Police detectives were assigned to investigate a report of sexual assault stemming from ads placed on Craigslist.  Rauf, posing as an employer seeking applicants for a secretarial position in Reston, would arrange to meet female applicants at an office building in Reston.  When the applicants arrived they would be advised that the building was under construction and the interview would be taking place in Rauf’s vehicle.  Detectives were able to trace the IP address of 50 similar Craigslist ads back to a business in Sterling and Rauf was positively identified in a photo lineup.  Loudoun County detectives were contacted when additional evidence and electronics were located in a locked drawer in Rauf’s desk.  Upon execution of a search warrant and a forensic examination of Rauf’s electronics, detectives discovered approximately 1,900 images of child pornography on an external hard drive located in the drawer.  Rauf was subsequently charged with three counts of production of child pornography and one count of sexual battery in Fairfax County and five counts of possession of child pornography in Loudoun County.

Rauf plead guilty to the five felonies in Loudoun County on June 22, 2018.  In addition to the six years of penitentiary time, Judge Fleming also imposed an additional ten years of suspended time.  Upon his release, Rauf will be placed on twenty years of supervised probation and will be required to successfully complete sex offender treatment, polygraphs, and he is forbidden from going upon or loitering within 100 yards of multiple areas in Loudoun County to include schools, parks, gymnasiums, daycares, and athletic fields.

Pursuant to Virginia’s Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry Act, Rauf will also be required to register as a sex offender.  Information about the Virginia’s Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry and those on it can be found on the Virginia State Police website: http://sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov

Rauf was sentenced to 12 years of active prison time for his Fairfax County charges on January 11, 2019.  Rauf’s prior criminal record also includes a probation violation and the sexual solicitation of a minor in Montgomery County, Maryland.

“Cross-jurisdictional cooperation is paramount when you encounter an individual such as Rauf,” said Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Nicole Wittmann.  “Law enforcement in Fairfax and Loudoun were able to work together to provide the necessary evidence for prosecutors to secure convictions and keep this sexual predator off the streets and out of our communities for the next eighteen years,” continued Wittmann.
