[ARCHIVED] Steven Thodos Sentenced to 60 years

Today, Loudoun County Circuit Court Judge Stephen E. Sincavage sentenced Thodos to a total of sixty (60) years to serve in the Department of Corrections. On May 26, 2022, a jury found Steven Thodos guilty of two counts of attempted capital murder, aggravated malicious wounding, three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and grand larceny of an auto. Thodos plead guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Buta Biberaj stated, “We remain appreciative of Deputies First Class Cameron Gentry and Charles Ewing, Walmart Asset Protection Associates, Jade Pusloskie and Muhammad Amin, and Ronald Simoneau for being steadfast since January 2, 2021. They and their families have endured a long and traumatic experience that we hope will now take a turn towards healing.”

The Commonwealth presented evidence which included his past criminal record, victim impact statement and witness testimony who described how Thodos’ actions affected them and their families.

“Today’s testimony was heartbreaking. We saw the video of the tragic event, and we re-experienced the trauma of the shooting and almost certain death of Dep. Gentry. The fact that Dep. Gentry did not die is nothing short of a miracle. But for the heroic actions of Dep. Ewing, it is believed that Dep. Gentry would have died. His parents would have lost a son. His sister would have lost her only brother. His friends would have lost a comrade. And, we would have lost a great member of our community. The testimony underscored the trauma Thodos inflicted and how it continues to impact them. We are grateful for the strength and resilience of every person associated with the prosecution, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, and the Fairfax Police Department, our community members who were witnesses, and each member of the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.”

“Thodos’s counsel presented evidence of significant childhood trauma and abuse experienced at the hands of his parents and other persons who should have protected him but did not. This, unfortunately, provides insight to the abuse he experienced, and speaks to the need for services for children being abused, the need to protect them, and to provide adequate services to prevent them from further harm.

As we know, “hurt people hurt people.” Notwithstanding the trauma he experienced, community safety demands that accountability be significant. It is our hope that he will receive treatment and services in prison that provide him with an opportunity to reconcile his trauma and acknowledge the harm he caused. There are no winners today,” said Biberaj.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney was represented by Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Shaniqua Clark Nelson and Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Michele Burton.
