Survey and Inspection Work Begins for the Western Loudoun Recreation Complex

Posted on February 1, 2024 at 2:56 PM by Heidi Kellum

This month, area residents will begin to see design consultants, contractors and equipment on the Western Loudoun Recreation Complex property in Purcellville conducting various surveys, tests, and inspections to inform the design process. For survey and investigative work, residents can expect the operation of tools and machinery on the property, such as a drill and auger, during allowable work hours.

In addition to investigative work, crews will begin marking utilities, trees, and delineating wetland areas. Mapping the wetlands is critical in the design process because it will provide the exact limits of the most environmentally sensitive areas on the property. The project design team will use this information to avoid impacting the wetlands areas wherever possible.

About the Project

This project provides funding for the design and construction of a new 83,000 sq ft recreation center and park on a 142.71-acre site at 36716 Main Street just outside the town limits of Purcellville.

The recreation center will include meeting/classrooms, administrative office space, gymnasium, kitchen, fitness center, multi-purpose rooms, and a running track. The facility will also include an aquatics center with a competition pool, leisure pool, spa, spectator seating areas, two wet classrooms, splash play area, and associated locker rooms. Additional features on the grounds may include sports courts, rock-climbing wall, outdoor fitness area, and a diving pool.

The park will include up to ten athletic fields – four diamond fields and six rectangular fields. Supporting amenities will include athletic field lighting, fencing, public utilities, parking, access from a public road, groundwater wells irrigation, and landscaping. Additionally, the park will include public restrooms, concessions facilities, staff offices, meeting rooms, storage, scorekeeper and umpire areas, a maintenance facility, picnic pavilions, and bleachers.

The project will also provide a master plan identifying a potential future 40,000 square-foot Library facility.
