Design Phase Continues for the Shellhorn Extended Project

Posted on February 14, 2024 at 11:13 AM by Heidi Kellum

Loudoun County continues to work on developing the 100% design plans for Shellhorn Road Extension. This project is partially located on the Dulles International Airport property and requires extensive coordination with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). Planning is underway for the utility relocation phase. Due to the extensive coordination, the design phase is estimated to be completed in fall 2024.

The project’s right of way (ROW) phase will begin in fall 2024. More information about Loudoun County Capital Project phases is provided at loudoun.gov/capitalprojects.

This project will extend Shellhorn Road to become a collector road along the north side of the Dulles Greenway. Shellhorn road currently begins in the west at Waxpool Road and ends at Loudoun County Parkway. Shellhorn Road is being extended eastward, parallel to the Dulles Greenway, until it reaches existing Lockridge Road. From there, Shellhorn Road will turn to the south and follow the alignment of Lockridge Road until it reaches the northernmost property line of Dulles Airport. This portion of the Shellhorn Road extension will extend Shellhorn south by the northern entrance to the Loudoun Gateway Silver Line station, then east to connect with the Sterling Blvd. extension.

The project will also realign a portion of Lockridge Road and extend Randolph Drive to link with Old Ox Road (Route 606). When completed, Shellhorn Road will be a continuous route from Waxpool Road to Route 28 at the present-day Sterling Boulevard interchange.
