Utility Work for the Route 9/287 Roundabout Project Set to Begin in Late February

Posted on February 16, 2024 at 9:20 AM by Heidi Kellum

In late February, utility work will begin as part of the Route 9/287 Roundabout project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 287 near Wheatland. Residents and drivers can expect to see crews clearing trees and working to relocate power and telecommunications utilities near the intersection for the next few months. Although no traffic impacts are planned, heavy equipment may periodically access the roadway. Drivers are advised to take extra caution when traveling through this area and follow all directions from posted signs and road crews.

The Utilities Relocation phase is currently estimated for completion in March 2025. More information about Loudoun County Capital Projects and phases is provided at loudoun.gov/capitalprojects.

The project consists of a new hybrid roundabout at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 287 with widened roadway approaches. Improvements will also include new drainage, as well as relocation of utilities that will be impacted by the project. When complete, the project will significantly reduce existing traffic congestion, improve safety, and provide a long-term, cost-effective solution for future roadway operation and maintenance. The project is currently estimated for substantial completion in fall 2026.
