Bridge Construction is Progressing on the Northstar Boulevard Project

Posted on March 1, 2024 at 12:19 PM by Heidi Kellum

Crews constructing a new segment of Northstar Boulevard from Evergreen Mills Road to Route 50 in Aldie are making progress on the bridge over North Fork Broad Run. Over the last few weeks, the project reached a significant milestone with the completion of the bridge abutment and girder beam work. Currently, crews are beginning bridge deck activities and will be working to complete water-line connections through the month of March 2024. Groundwork operations and storm pipe installations are ongoing as crews prepare for paving activities to begin in spring (April, May, June) 2024, weather permitting.

Loudoun County’s design-builder is constructing a new four-lane, median-divided segment of Northstar Boulevard from Evergreen Mills Road (formerly Shreveport Drive) to U.S. Route 50. The project includes a 10-foot-wide, shared-use path along both sides of the roadway and a new traffic signal at Evergreen Mills Road. At the northern end of the project, a new bridge will carry Northstar Boulevard over North Fork Broad Run. In addition, Arcola Mills Drive is being realigned to the south to intersect with Northstar Boulevard.

Northstar Boulevard is part of the North/South Corridor of Statewide Significance as designated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), addressing congestion and mobility on parallel north/south routes between I-95 and Dulles International Airport and connecting travelers to activity centers in Loudoun County and beyond. It is part of what will be a 14-mile-long corridor extending from Route 7 south to the Prince William County line where it links to Sanders Lane which leads to the Route 234 corridor.

The county has recently opened the segment of Northstar Boulevard from Route 50 to Tall Cedars Parkway. Funding for the Northstar Boulevard Phase 1 project is provided by an FY 2017 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) discretionary grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, VDOT, NVTA and county funds. Construction is expected to be completed by winter 2025.
