Loudoun County Update

  • New VDH Dashboard: The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has announced a new dashboard to show COVID-19 cases by vaccination status and to track COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases. (Vaccine breakthrough means that someone who is fully vaccinated develops COVID-19.) The VDH COVID-19 in Virginia dashboards now include information on the number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths by vaccination status. They also include data to track COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
  • Are Booster Shots Needed? Federal health officials say people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need booster shots “at this time.” The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a joint statement saying that people who are fully vaccinated are protected from severe disease and death, including from the variants currently circulating in the country such as the Delta variant. However, the statement says officials are not ruling out the possibility that booster shots might be needed in the future.
  • CDC Updates Guidance for Schools: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued updated guidance on preventing the spread of COVID-19 in grades K-12, saying that “students benefit from in-person learning, and safely returning to in-person instruction in the fall 2021 is a priority.” The CDC says vaccinations are the best way to end the pandemic and recommends that masks should be worn indoors in schools by anyone age 2 and older who is not fully vaccinated.
  • ICMA Spotlights Loudoun’s COVID-19 Response: The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) has spotlighted Loudoun County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the Medical Reserve Corps and the county’s communication efforts. The article describes how other local governments can utilize their communications offices and Medical Reserve Corps for an effective emergency response.
  • COVID-19 Hope Quilt on Display: The current art exhibit at Gallery One in the Loudoun County Government Center features the COVID-19 Hope Quilt, a community-based art project that used 10-by-10-inch quilt panels to honor those affected by COVID-19. The individual panels are expressions of gratitude for front line workers and acts of remembrance for those lost to the disease. The exhibit, organized by the Loudoun County Art Advisory Committee, will be on display through August 31, 2021.
