• Total Vaccine Doses Administered - Loudoun: 499,057 (up 4,079 since last report) I  Virginia: 9,808,587 (up 114,101 since last report)

Loudoun County Update

• Full Approval for Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given full approval to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 16 years and older. In today's announcement, the FDA said; "the public can be very confident that this vaccine meets the high standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality the FDA requires of an approved product.” The Pfizer vaccine will continue to be available under emergency use authorization for individuals 12 through 15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.

• Loudoun Extends Vaccine Clinic Operations: Loudoun County is extending operations at the Dulles Town Center vaccination site by one week, offering more opportunities for COVID-19 vaccinations. The clinic is now scheduled to close permanently at noon, Friday, September 3, 2021. The extension of services at the Dulles Town Center clinic will provide a bridge to the planned opening of an alternate, smaller vaccination clinic in early September. Details about the opening of the new vaccination site will be announced soon. This week’s hours of operation at the Dulles Town Center clinic are Tuesday, August 24, 4:00 – 6:30 p.m.; Friday, August 27, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 28, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome at the clinic. • Health Officials Recommend Booster Shots Against COVID-19: Federal health officials last week announced a plan to provide booster shots to those people who have received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The proposed plan comes as the Delta variant continues to spread and scientific data indicates that the vaccines’ effectiveness against the virus decreases over time. Officials say the doses could begin the week of September 20, 2021, and will be available from many providers throughout the community currently providing COVID-19 vaccine, such as medical offices and pharmacies. Officials say they also expect to recommend a booster for those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine after they analyze more data. The Loudoun County Health Department strongly urges anyone 12 and older who has not yet been vaccinated to get a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. Virtually all current COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths are among those who are unvaccinated.
  
• CDC Offers Health Tips for Back to School During COVID-19: The COVID-19 pandemic presents a new set of challenges as schools prepare to reopen with in-person learning. Transitions can be hard for children in the best of times, so they may need extra support this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says it is "critically important" to consider the health and well-being of students as well as staff and address mental and physical health issues related to COVID-19 in a supportive environment. • VDH Updates COVID-19 Cases by Vaccination Status Dashboard: The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has  updated its COVID-19 Cases by Vaccination Status dashboard to more accurately represent the impact of vaccinations on infection rates in Virginia. The primary change is reporting rates of infection, hospitalizations and deaths by vaccination status — fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated, and unvaccinated. The new dashboard allows comparison of the rate of people with COVID-19 who are fully, partially, and not vaccinated. Counts of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths of people who are fully vaccinated, called "vaccine breakthrough", will also be available at the state and health region levels.
