• Total Vaccine Doses Administered - Loudoun: 522,274 (up 2,301 since last report) I  Virginia: 10,609,562 (up 77,200 since last report)

Loudoun County Update

• FDA Schedules Key Meetings on COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters, Vaccine for Children: A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee is set to take up several topics related to COVID-19 vaccine at meetings this month. The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) is scheduled to meet at least three days in October: 
  • Thursday, October 14: Discussion of authorizing booster doses of the Moderna vaccine. 
  • Friday, October 15: Discussion of authorizing booster doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine; and discussion of mixing vaccine types - receiving initial doses of one COVID-19 vaccine and, later, a booster dose of another manufacturer's vaccine. 
  • Tuesday, October 26: Discussion of the use of a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 
  • The October 14 and 15 VRBPAC meetings will include public comment periods.

• MRC Needs Vaccinators: With approval of COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 expected in the coming weeks, the Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is preparing now by issuing a call for volunteer vaccinators—especially for those who are comfortable with vaccinating young children. The anticipated upcoming increase in demand for the COVID-19 vaccine will require additional support from the Loudoun MRC and the medical community. Registered nurses, nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and physicians with a current Virginia license who are comfortable vaccinating children as young as 5 years old are needed now to ensure there are enough vaccinators available as soon as the Loudoun County Health Department is authorized to begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine to this younger age group. • Next COVID-19 Testing Event is October 5: The next Loudoun County-sponsored COVID-19 testing event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 5, 2021, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., at Franklin Park, 17501 Franklin Park Drive, Purcellville (Follow signs to the baseball field parking lot.) The Loudoun County Health Department encourages you to get tested if you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and a new loss of taste or smell or if you have potentially been exposed to someone with COVID-19, regardless of your vaccination status. The drive-thru testing event is free and open to all. To save time, required registration forms can be filled out ahead of time. The forms as well as information about other testing providers and the schedule of events may be found at loudoun.gov/covid19testing.
• How to Test Yourself for COVID-19: If you’re not sure how to use an at-home COVID-19 testing kit, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted new videos showing how to use a self-collection kit or a self-test and how to interpret the results. These self-collection kits and tests are available either by prescription or over the counter, without a prescription, in a pharmacy or retail store. Read more from the CDC.
