Loudoun County, VA- The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports this week of residents receiving phone calls where the caller is impersonating a law enforcement official and asking for money to pay a fine or clear an arrest warrant.
Today, the LCSO received additional reports where the callers are using actual names of local officers in Loudoun County to help make the scam appear legitimate. The caller states that the fine can be taken care of by obtaining Google Play gift cards or other money cards.
“Under no circumstance would a law enforcement official in Virginia contact you to collect fines for an outstanding warrant,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. “These thieves use the appearance of authority and prey on a person’s fears in hopes that the victim will be more willing to provide the money.”
If you have any questions as to the validity of a telephone call from any law enforcement agency or have been a victim of this telephone scam, you are asked to call the LCSO non-emergency dispatch line at 703-777-1021.
